VOLUNTEER POSITION: Newsroom Mentor

Arts Angle Vantage gives young people (14–18) free access to arts events and experiences, as well as opportunities to meet and talk with artists and media producers in a safe environment where they can learn more about the arts and develop their own writing and reporting skills.” Since 2018, our inclusive out-of-school workshop programs have been held at universities and community sites.

Arts Angle Vantage participants receive a greater sense of accomplishment and recognition because we ensure their stories are published. Their work is published on our platform and
has appeared in the Courier-Journal, LEO Weekly and high school publications.

The Arts Angle Newsroom: January 2026 marks the launch of this cornerstone program where young people receive mentorship from professional writers, reporters, editors and photographers and learn more about the arts, journalism and storytelling.

The newsroom provides Louisville area young people with opportunities they won’t find anywhere else. Those include the possibilities to learn more about local arts and gain media literacy while they develop critical thinking and proficient writing skills. In the process, they get to know Louisville communities and each other — something that can more deeply connect them to the metropolitan area.

The newsroom meets on Mondays and Saturdays from January through May. Programming includes panel discussions, interviews and presentations. It also includes important two-hour sessions at Frances Parker School of Louisville participants learn more about recognising stories and how to pitch, report and write them.

Arts Angle Newsroom Mentor: Seeking professionals with the ability to dedicate five to eight hours a month from January to May 2026. These people work with the Director and Newsroom Associates to support and mentor Arts Angle Newsroom participants as they pitch and produce articles and reviews about the arts in the Louisville area. They will attend pitch/story meetings, contribute to discussions, and help guide participants in the reporting and editing process. These volunteers also contribute to the Arts Angle Newsroom ecosystem by providing insight and suggestions for improving newsroom practices. That can include approaches to topics covered, guest speakers invited, and tactics for reporting, writing, presenting and promoting participants’ stories.

These roles are best suited for those who have been involved in journalism (reporters, editors, copyeditors, etc.) or the communications field. Participants may need help finding story angles, determining sources to approach, or overcoming creative blocks, etc.

Also desired are professionals specializing in broadcast and photography who can work with young people to share their expertise. (The organization has photo and audio equipment.)

TASKS/DUTIES
Programming
-
Participate, facilitate and support participants’ pitch/story meetings in collaboration with other team members.

Consult with the Director or Newsroom Associate to determine which participants require support during a given session or in future sessions.

Participate in team meetings with other adults guiding the program.

Inform the Director or Newsroom Associate(s) of reporting activities covering and reviewing events, conducting interviews and ensuring any specific needs for resources or additional guidance and training.

Support the adult team’s [Director or Newsroom Associate(s)] communications with program participants and parents/guardians.
Publishing
-
Support the Director or Newsroom Associate with the management of the publication schedule for the website and any additional distribution channels, to ensure all deadlines are met.

Provide editorial support to participants (editors and reporters) alongside other team members.

Support final proofing and publishing of participant-created content.

Support posting website updates to support the participants.

Support social media visibility and posting for Arts Angle Newsroom to support the participants.

Support coordination with external publishing partners to cross-publish and promote content.

Evaluation + Reporting

Support the Director or Newsroom Associate to track and evaluate specific program data.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED SKILLS

Bachelor’s degree preferred, or commensurate knowledge and experience in journalism, in digital media publishing and with project management and social media.

Excellent writer, reporting and editing skills.

Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written. Ability to effectively communicate with multiple audiences that include all ages.

Knowledge of AP style.

Computer and web publishing skills are a must.

Must have a desire to support young people and elevate their voices.

Must be comfortable and excited about working with a diverse group of teenagers and adults.

Must be able to contribute on designated Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons, January to May 2026.

SCHEDULE + COMPENSATION

Sessions are 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays, January- May 2026.

Volunteers are expected to devote at least five hours a month to the program.

The director will arrange a volunteer schedule based on each volunteer’s availability.

Knowing your contributions are making a real difference. This is a volunteer position.
