POSITION DESCRIPTION:
2026 Arts Angle Editorial Newsroom Team Member
The Arts Angle Editorial Team leads Arts Angle Newsroom’s writers (reporters and critics) during the newsroom’s inaugural term from January through May 2026. With the support of Arts Angle mentors, the Arts Angle Editorial Team oversees the selection of Arts Angle’s coverage, including articles and commentary focusing on local arts and creativity. This includes, but is not limited to, arts reviews, previews and news reports. Participants in the Arts Angle Newsroom become published writers.
Arts Angle helps train this team of editors who also work with mentors to support their newsroom colleagues through the reporting and writing process.

Who: Team members must be 16 to 18 years of age and high school students in the Greater Louisville public or private high school or be home-schooled. A solid knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation is key to those who desire an Editorial Team position. A keen ability to organize is also important. Applicants must submit the linked form below and complete the application.
When and Where: January – May 2026. The Arts Angle Newsroom meets Mondays, 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, noon to 2 p.m., at Francis Parker School of Louisville, 233 W. Broadway, Louisville, KY. (See the full schedule here.)

Monday, Jan. 5, Editorial Team Orientation: 4 to 6 p.m.

Note: We do not meet on Monday, Jan.19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) or Saturday, May 2 (Derby Day).

Participation Awards: Each Editorial Team member can earn a $100 per month participation award for a maximum of $500 from January through May 2026 for fulfilling their editorial duties. They can also earn participation awards for specific articles or reviews.
Each team member receives the award each month based on

Communication with mentors and other team members.

Meeting deadlines.

Editing content.

General participation and leading pitch meetings.
NOTE: For Editorial Team members who write additional pieces, Arts Angle provides participation awards of $20 to $40, depending on the depth of reporting and writing on the piece. A team member also receives two complimentary tickets when he/she covers an event.
Time Commitment: About 5 to 10 hours per week from January through mid-May.

Monday, Jan. 5, 4-6 p.m., Editorial Team orientation is mandatory

Saturday, Jan. 10, Newsroom orientation, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Lunch is included.)

All Newsroom Pitch Meetings (Saturdays) throughout the term are mandatory.

Expectations:

Work collaboratively with Arts Angle Newsroom team members to select Arts Angle’s upcoming coverage and identify visuals to accompany articles and reviews.

Plan and lead Newsroom Pitch Meetings.

Maintain the Arts Angle Newsroom team inbox and respond to press inquiries promptly.

Act as the Lead Editor for at least two articles/reviews per month.
Lead Editor duties include:

Communicating with the Newsroom team to secure a writer for the event.

Communicating with the organization (theater, museum/gallery, presenter, etc.) to set up press tickets, secure photos, and share finished reviews.

Possibly attend the event with a team member.

Checking for correct grammar and punctuation in pieces. Double-check the spelling of names, titles and facts for articles.

Edit team member’s review in a constructive and respectful manner

Participate in mentorship opportunities, including writing reviews edited and mentored by professional journalists and critics.

Communicate regularly with the Arts Angle Director.

Attend occasional Board meetings and Arts Angle events as an Arts Angle Newsroom representative.

The application requests four kinds of documents.

Parent/Caretaker consent form. (Access the form in the application.)

A one-page letter of purpose in which applicants indicate why they seek to be a member of the Editorial Team and what interests and skills they bring to the role.

Two writing samples. (Those that focus on art or are written in journalistic form are not required, but applicants should include at least one if available.)

A Letter of Recommendation. This may be written by a teacher, mentor, coach, boss or peer collaborator and address the applicant’s accountability, responsibility, communication and leadership abilities. The applicant’s advocate making this recommendation must send the letter directly to the Arts Angle Director, ekramer [at] artsanglevantage.org by Monday, Dec. 8, 2025.
