Open House: Learn about April arts journalism workshop for teens

This remote workshop presented by Arts Bureau Edge is free. Our organization has fostered arts journalism since 2018 and given young people a voice in covering the arts and issues in their community and the world.

WHEN/SESSION DATES: 3 Saturdays; 2 Mondays

S: April 10 10-11:30 a.m.

M: April 12 6-7:30 p.m.

S: April 17 10-11:30 a.m.

M: April 19 6-7:30 p.m.

S: April 24 10-11:30 a.m.


YOU SHOULD APPLY IF:

• You are 14-19 years old and live in the greater Louisville metropolitan area.

• You're excited to report on the local arts; you're engaged in the arts and the community; and/or you are curious, love writing and telling stories.

• You want to share stories as a journalist — this workshop is not a platform to promote a cause, organization, or point of view.

• You are ready to try new things: No journalism experience required.


WHAT: A free, hands-on workshop to learn and practice arts journalism by reporting on the local arts community and relevant subjects with the guidance of professional arts journalists/educators. Past Arts Bureau Edge workshop participants have covered Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts and productions presented by Actors Theatre of Louisville, Dance Theater of Harlem at Kentucky Center, Pandora Productions, Broadway in Louisville musicals, and Floyd Central High School’s “Newsies.” (See below for coverage.)


WHERE: You will work remotely with mentors to produce your articles, which will be posted on ArtsBureauEdge.com.


PROGRAM SPECIFICS: Sessions cover essential elements of arts journalism: making a story pitch; researching and interviewing; and writing. Special guests included. On average, work outside of the sessions averages two to four hours a week and depends on your aspirations. (This is based on interviews with past participants.)


REQUIREMENTS, ETC.:

• To participate, applicants must sign an agreement to attend all 5 workshop sessions.

• Applicants will be considered based on their reasons for applying coupled with their writing skills .

• Only 8 spots are available.
